Connemara Single Malt Peated Irish Whiskey is Ireland's best-known peated whiskey. Made at the Cooley Distillery in County Louth and named for the wild western region of Galway, it revives the old Irish practice of drying malted barley over peat fires, a style that all but vanished from Ireland in the 20th century. It is double distilled and bottled at 80 proof. The peat is gentler than Islay Scotch: sweet malt, vanilla and a touch of coastal brine on the nose, then soft smoke wrapped around honey, orchard fruit and light oak. The finish is smoky but clean. It is a great bridge whiskey for Scotch drinkers exploring Ireland, and it makes a distinctive Penicillin or smoky highball. This 750ml bottle is the one to reach for when you want smoke without the intensity.
